Rockies' Chatwood stymies Giants for first career shutout

SAN FRANCISCO -- Colorado Rockies right-hander Tyler Chatwood continued his mastery of the San Francisco Giants on Saturday at AT&T Park, taking a perfect game into the sixth inning and finishing with the first shutout of his career in a 5-0 victory.

Nolan Arenado smacked his fourth home run of the season and also contributed a double and a single to an 11-hit attack as the Rockies won for the second time in three days to start the four-game series.

Chatwood (1-2), who had the best ERA (0.69) of all pitchers with two more starts at AT&T Park last season, was better than ever in his first 2017 visit.

The 27-year-old California native retired the first 17 batters he faced before replacement left fielder Chris Marrero stroked a single to right field with two outs in the sixth inning.

Chatwood bounced back to retire 10 of the final 12 batters he faced, allowing only a seventh-inning single to Joe Panik and a ninth-inning walk to Denard Span.

The complete game was just the second of Chatwood's six-year career. Coincidentally, the only previous one came in a loss -- a 1-0 decision to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 13, 2013.

Chatwood shared in four shutouts last season, including one on Sept. 28 at San Francisco in which he allowed just three hits in eight innings. He struck out four in his 105-pitch effort Sunday.

Arenado gave his pitcher all the run support he needed with a solo shot into the left field bleachers in the third inning for his fourth home run of the season.

The homer was the 20th of Arenado's career against the Giants.

Charlie Blackmon's two-run single capped a three-run fourth off Giants left-hander Matt Moore (1-2) that gave the Rockies a 4-0 lead.

Stephen Cardullo's second of two hits drove in Colorado's final run in the fifth inning.

Moore was pulled two outs in the sixth, having allowed five runs and 10 hits. He walked three and struck out five.

Moore had entered the game with a 5-0 record and 1.50 ERA in his previous six starts at AT&T Park.

Arenado had a shot at a cycle in the ninth inning, needing a triple. But he flied to right field against the fourth Giants pitcher, left-hander Ty Blach.

The Giants lost left fielder Jarrett Parker to a broken right clavicle when he crashed into the left field wall catching DJ LeMahieu's bid for extra bases in the fourth inning. Parker left the field holding his right shoulder and had to be taken out of the game.

The Giants had entered the game tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks in runs scored with 56.

NOTES: Jackie Robinson, honored by the Rockies and Giants throughout the game, never played a Major League Baseball regular-season game on the West Coast. But he did have 759 career at-bats against the (New York) Giants, hitting .308. ... The only active players with more home runs than 3B Nolan Arenado are RF Matt Kemp (23) and 1B Adrian Gonzalez. ... The Rockies and Giants share the major-league lead in games played with 13. Colorado is the only team in baseball that has not had a day off yet. ... Rockies LF Gerardo Parra was on hand in Miami for the birth of daughter Aaliyah Victoria on Friday morning. He is expected to rejoin the team Tuesday in Los Angeles.
