Orioles claim 7-4 win over Yankees in 11 innings

NEW YORK -- Mark Trumbo hit the tiebreaking single with two outs in the top of the 11th inning as the Baltimore Orioles blew a two-run lead in the ninth before getting a 7-4 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Trumbo gave the Orioles their second lead of the game when he grounded a clean single up the middle on a 2-and-1 fastball by Bryan Mitchell (1-1).

Trumbo's go-ahead hit occurred after Joey Rickard singled and stole second. After Mitchell fell behind Manny Machado, the Yankees opted to intentionally walk the third baseman.

After Trumbo's hit, the Orioles scored two more times.

Wellington Castillo blooped a single into right field to make it 6-4. The Orioles added the next run when Trumbo scored after third baseman Chase Headley dropped a throw from second baseman Starlin Castro.

Logan Verrett (1-0) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th and pitched two scoreless innings in his season debut.

Leading up to the 11th, the Orioles were one out from a 4-2 win, but Didi Gregorius hit a two-run single off Donnie Hart.

The game-tying hit occurred after Darren O'Day was charged with a balk on a pickoff attempt at second.

After Castro and Judge were awarded second and third, manager Buck Showalter was ejected after a demonstrative argument and Headley drew a four-pitch walk.

The 10th inning featured Mitchell playing first base. He was charged with an error for dropping a foul pop by Castillo but earned cheers for catching one by Jonathan Schoop.

The Yankees loaded the bases when pinch-hitter Greg Bird was hit by a pitch, but Aaron Judge struck out to end the 10th.

Long before the wild ending, Matt Holliday homered and Headley hit an RBI single to give New York a 2-1 lead in the third. The Orioles scored three times in the sixth and took a 4-2 lead on Schoop's double and a groundout by Craig Gentry.

Both starters danced around trouble, leaving it up to the bullpens to settle matters.

Miley pulled a five-inning escape act, allowing two runs and eight hits in five innings. He threw 114 pitches -- six shy of his career high -- and survived five walks.

The Yankees were 2-for-13 with men on base against Miley.

New York rookie left-hander Jordan Montgomery allowed three runs and three hits in five-plus innings.
