Astros' five-run inning buries Rangers
HOUSTON -- Carlos Correa delivered a two-run double during a five-run seventh inning, and the Houston Astros beat the Texas Rangers 6-2 on Monday night at Minute Maid Park.
Correa followed an infield RBI single from George Springer and a run-scoring double by Jose Altuve by scorching a double past the Rangers' drawn-in infield to drive in two runs, pushing the Astros (17-9) to a 5-2 lead. Yuli Gurriel added a double to left-center field to plate Correa and cap the breakthrough frame for the Astros.
Houston had squandered scoring opportunities in the second and fifth innings against Rangers right-hander Andrew Cashner (0-3), who departed after Alex Bregman and Nori Aoki reached to open the seventh. Cashner allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks over six-plus innings. He fanned two.
The five-run rally made a winner out of right-hander Chris Devenski (2-1), who entered with one out and a runner on in the seventh in relief of Astros starter Lance McCullers. Devenski retired all five batters he faced and struck out two.
McCullers surrendered an RBI double to shortstop Elvis Andrus and a solo homer to first baseman Mike Napoli in the second and fourth innings, respectively. However, he delivered another quality start for Houston, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings.
Texas (11-15) has lost five of seven.
Cashner, coming off a six-walk performance against the Minnesota Twins on April 25, was a different kind of wild on Monday. He plunked one batter in the first inning and other in the second, with Altuve adding a steal of second base to his free pass before coming around to score when Nomar Mazara dropped a Correa fly ball with two outs in the first inning.
Gurriel reached when he was hit by a pitch leading off the second, but Cashner recovered to induce three consecutive groundball outs after Brian McCann singled to push Gurriel into scoring position. Cashner fielded the first of those grounders off the bat of Bregman and threw out Gurriel as he inexplicably attempted to score from third base to preserve the 1-1 deadlock.
Napoli, who scored on Andrus' run-scoring double in the second, scored again when he blasted the first pitch of his second at-bat against McCullers out to straightaway center field, a 427-foot shot that was his fourth homer of 2017.
