Tigers 2, Yankees 6

CC Sabathia pitched seven strong innings and Curtis Granderson homered against his former team as the New York Yankees posted a 6-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers Tuesday.

Robinson Cano also homered and Brett Gardner collected two hits and scored twice for the Yankees, who won for just the second time in six meetings with the Tigers this season.

Sabathia (16-5) yielded two runs and five hits in again becoming the American League leader in victories. The left-hander, who walked three and struck out nine, won for the 12th time in 14 decisions.

Austin Jackson gave Detroit a short-lived lead, depositing Sabathia's second pitch of the game over the left-field wall for his second home run of the season. Nick Swisher quickly replied in the bottom of the first with a two-run single that would put the Yankees ahead for good.

Justin Verlander (13-8) proceeded to walk Jorge Posada and load the bases for the second time in that first frame, but avoided further damage by getting Marcus Thames to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Verlander found more trouble in the second inning when Granderson opened the frame with his 12th blast of the year, giving the Yankees a 3-1 advantage.

Derek Jeter delivered an RBI single in the sixth and Cano led off the seventh with his 22nd homer for New York. Ramiro Pena added a sacrifice fly later in the frame to cap the scoring.

Verlander allowed three runs and five hits in five innings, walking five and striking out five while throwing 114 pitches.

Brandon Inge added hit a solo homer for Detroit, which has won just four of its last 18 road games.
