Willie Bloomquist hit a solo homer in the top of the 12th inning to push the Kansas City Royals past the Detroit Tigers with a 4-3 comeback win on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.
Philip Humber (1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen with three scoreless innings. Joakim Soria struck out two in the 12th to earn his 36th save of the year.
Kila Ka’aihue had two hits, including a solo homer and an RBI double, while scoring two runs for Kansas City.
The Royals scored a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth, with Brayan Pena’s run-scoring double helping to push the game to extra innings.
Tigers starter Armando Galarraga threw 6 1/3 strong innings, allowing one run while striking out four. Kansas City starter Sean O’Sullivan allowed three earned runs over seven innings.
Detroit shortstop Ramon Santiago had three hits, including a two-run triple, and scored a run.
Alredo Figaro (0-1) allowed the Bloomquist homer to take the loss.
