Athletics 4, Rays 3
Cliff Pennington drove in the winning run for the second consecutive game and Trevor Cahill threw eight solid innings as the Oakland Athletics rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night.
The Athletics scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 3-1 deficit.
Tampa Bay’s Dan Wheeler (2-1) replaced starter Andy Sonnanstine and gave up an RBI groundout to Rajai Davis. Pennington followed with a double that brought home Jack Cust and Kevin Kouzmanoff. Pennington’s run-scoring single Wednesday gave the A’s a 5-4 walkoff win against Toronto.
Cahill (13-5) allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Jerry Blevins pitched the ninth for his first save.
Carlos Pena gave the Rays a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the fourth and Evan Longoria made it 3-1 with his 17th homer in the sixth.
Sonnanstine allowed three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
