Rookie Jason Heyward slapped a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Atlanta Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.
Heyward singled off Tyler Clippard to plate Rick Ankiel to lift Atlanta (71-49) to victory.
Alex Gonzalez had an RBI single and Martin Prado scored a run for the Braves, who remained 2.5 games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies atop the NL East. The Phillies posted an 8-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
Closer Billy Wagner (7-2) picked up the win after striking out the side in the ninth inning.
Ryan Zimmerman and Roger Bernadina recorded run-scoring singles for Washington (51-69), which was unable to hold an early 2-0 advantage.
Sean Burnett suffered the loss after allowing one run and one hit in 1 1/3 innings.
