Padres 1, Cubs 0
The San Diego Padres made an RBI ground out in the first inning stand up as the winning run against the Chicago Cubs in a 1-0 victory on Tuesday night.
Chase Headley plated the game's only RBI, bringing in Jerry Hairston Jr. with the grounder to first base.
Jon Garland (12-8) went seven innings for the Padres, allowing four hits before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
Mike Adams threw one scoreless inning of relief and Heath Bell notched his 36th save of the year.
Chicago starter Randy Wells came out after the seventh inning after giving up the single run on three hits. Wells (5-11) had six strikeouts and walked three.
The Cubs came within inches of leaving the ballpark with a walk-off victory, but Blake DeWitt’s blast with Aramis Ramirez on first was caught by Padres outfielder Ryan Ludwick right at the right-field wall.
