Matt Stairs drove in a pair of runs and Adrian Gonzalez his a home run as the San Diego Padres secured a 5-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday afternoon.
Chase Headley drove in a run and Clayton Richard tossed 6 2/3 strong innings as San Diego took its third straight in the four-game set.
Richard (11-5) allowed just one run on seven hits to grab his fourth consecutive victory. Three relievers combined for 2 2/3 perfect innings the rest of the way.
The Padres got on the board in the first inning when Stairs hit a two-run double off the top of the left-field wall with the bases loaded. Gonzalez finished 2-for-2, including with his 23rd homer of the campaign, with three walks and three runs.
Chicago stater Casey Coleman (0-1) lost his first career start, allowing three runs over 4 1/3 innings.
Jeff Baker drove in the Cubs’ lone run and Alfonso Soriano was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
