Rockies 6, Mets 2
Melvin Mora's grand slam in the eighth inning snapped Colorado out of its offensive woes against the New York Mets and lifted the Rockies to a 6-2 victory Wednesday.
The Rockies had been shut out in five of their last seven road games against New York and Mets starter Jonathon Niese held them scoreless for six innings before they finally broke through on Chris Iannetta's sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Niese allowed one run on five hits over seven innings, striking out seven and leaving with a 2-1 lead.
But the Mets' bullpen couldn't hold it. Hisanori Takahashi (7-6) allowed a single and a walk with two outs in the eighth before giving way to Manny Acosta, who threw a wild pitch, intentionally walked Troy Tulowitzki and gave up Mora's fourth career grand slam. Clint Barmes added an RBI single later in the inning.
Angel Pagan's two-run homer in the first inning accounted for the Mets' runs, but they couldn't manage any more against Jeff Francis and Colorado's bullpen.
Francis allowed two runs on three hits and struck out five over six innings. Matt Belisle, Rafael Betancourt and Huston Street worked perfect innings in relief with Belisle (5-4) earning the win.
