Yankees 4, Red Sox 2

Russell Martin hit a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning and the New York Yankees went on to a 4-2 victory over host Boston Red Sox on Thursday night at Fenway Park.

Eric Chavez plated Martin with a run-scoring single off Daniel Bard for his fourth RBI of the series as the Yankees took two of three contests to pull within a half-game of division-leading Boston atop the American League East.

Robinson Cano added an RBI double to help New York beat the Red Sox for only the fourth time in 15 meetings this year.

Boston's Dustin Pedroia hit his career-high 18th homer, a two-run shot off A.J. Burnett in the fourth inning to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead.

New York received 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief before Mariano Rivera worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his 36th save. Cory Wade (3-0) retired one batter for the win.

Ex-Yankee Alfredo Aceves (9-2) lost for the first time since May 31, allowing two runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Red Sox starter Jon Lester lasted just five innings and threw 114 pitches, including 43 in the first inning.
