Mariners 3, Rays 2
Michael Pineda struck out a career-high 10 and allowed just one hit in 6 1/3 innings to help the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 victory over the host Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.
Jeff Gray retired five consecutive batters and Brandon League worked a perfect ninth for his 24th save to complete the one-hitter as Seattle won for just the second time in 20 games.
The Mariners pushed ahead the go-ahead run in the sixth when Dustin Ackley doubled with one out and scored on Mike Carp’s sharply hit single to right.
Tampa Bay’s only hit off Pineda (9-7) was Ben Zobrist’s two-out single in the sixth tied the score at 2. Pineda was removed after issuing back-to-back walks in the seventh to Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce and Gray needed just two pitches to get the final two outs of the inning.
Ackley hit a two-run homer in the first for Seattle. Tampa Bay tallied in the fourth when Johnny Damon walked, stole second and went to third on Josh Bard’s throwing error before scoring on a groundout by Zobrist.
Tampa Bay starter Alex Cobb (3-1) struck out a career-best nine in 6 1/3 innings. Cobb gave up three runs, six hits and walked one.
