Twins 2, Mariners 1
Francisco Liriano struck out nine in seven innings and Michael Cuddyer delivered a two-run single as the Minnesota Twins snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the host Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.
Liriano (3-5) allowed one run, three hits and one walk as he outdueled Seattle ace Felix Hernandez (4-4), who also struck out nine, and allowed two runs and three hits in eight innings.
Hernandez walked two of the first three hitters in the first before the Twins cashed in with Cuddyer’s two-out single to center.
Glen Perkins relieved Liriano and struck out two in the eighth and Matt Capps pitched the ninth for his sixth save as Minnesota won for the first time since May 6.
Seattle’s run came in the fifth when Brendan Ryan was hit by a pitch with two out, moved to third on a single by Michael Saunders and scored on Ichiro Suzuki’s single to center.
Cuddyer had two of Minnesota’s three hits.
