Rockies 9, Cubs 5
Dexter Fowler drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning, and the Colorado Rockies pulled away for a 9-5 victory against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, taking two of three in the weekend series at Coors Field.
The Rockies broke open a tied game with four runs in the eighth, with all the scoring coming after reliever Marcos Mateo (0-1) struck out Jose Morales and Ty Wigginton to get within an out of getting out of the jam.
After Fowler's two-run double, Jonathan Herrera and Carlos Gonzalez followed with RBI singles. Gonzalez was 4-for-5 with two RBIs.
Colorado has won 12 of 14 since an opening day loss to Arizona and has not lost a series this season.
The Rockies jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one inning, hitting Cubs starter Ryan Dempster hard. Dempster allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings. Seth Smith did the most damage in the first with a two-run home run to center, his second of the season.
The Cubs rallied to take a 5-4 lead against Rockies starter Alan Johnson, who lasted four innings and allowed five runs on six hits in his major league debut.
Rafael Betancourt (1-0) retired the only two batters he faced in the eighth for the win.
Starlin Castro went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Cubs, his sixth three-hit game of the season.
