Lance Berkman and Albert Pujols homered and Jaime Garcia pitched eight strong innings as St. Louis coasted past the visiting Chicago Cubs, 6-1, on Friday night.
Garcia (6-1) allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out eight. He got all the support he needed on Berkman's three-run homer in the first inning Pujols added a two-run shot in the fifth to make it 6-1. Berkman entered the game in an 0-for-12 funk.
Ryan Theriot extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a leadoff double in the first inning for the Cardinals.
Chicago's lone run came on an RBI double by Luis Montanez in the fifth inning. Cubs starter Ryan Dempster (4-5) surrendered six runs in five innings, giving up eight hits and three walks.
