Reds 3, Padres 2
Edinson Volquez outdueled Mat Latos and Chris Heisey hit a two-run homer as the visiting Cincinnati Reds edged the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Monday.
Jonny Gomes added a solo blast and Brandon Phillips had two hits for the Reds.
Volquez (2-0) had another shaky beginning, forcing in a run with a hit batter and allowing a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the first before settling down nicely. The Dominican righthander went six innings and allowed three hits, three walks and struck out five.
Volquez has allowed 11 runs this season, nine in the first inning.
Latos (0-1) was making his first start after shoulder troubles forced him to the disabled list to begin the season. He looked solid on Monday, striking out seven and surrendering four hits in six innings.
It was the long ball that victimized Latos as Gomes cut the deficit to 2-1 with his third homer in the fourth, and Heisey got to him in the fifth for a two-run shot - his first.
Francisco Cordero worked the ninth for his second save.
