Padres 3, Reds 2
Orlando Hudson scored the tying run in the eighth and drove in the winning run in walk-off fashion in the ninth as the San Diego Padres avoided a sweep with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
Nick Hundley added an RBI and a run scored for the Padres, who had dropped five of six.
For the second night in a row Nick Masset (0-3) came on for the Reds and gave up the lead, though this time he had some help. After Aroldis Chapman left with one out in the eighth and Hudson on first, catcher Ryan Hanigan threw the ball into center field on a stolen base attempt, allowing Hudson to reach third.
Jorge Cantu followed and grounded out to third, pushing Hudson across with the tying run.
After Heath Bell (1-0) shut Cincinnati down in the top of the ninth, Masset came back out again for the Reds and allowed a one-out walk followed by a single to Hundley. Will Venable was intentionally walked to load the bases and, after Jason Bartlett grounded out, Hudson lifted a single into left to plate Hundley with the winning run.
Cincinnati starter Travis Wood pitched well, yielding just a run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. He carried a shutout into the seventh.
Joey Votto had three hits, including an RBI double, and scored a run for the Reds.
