Athletics 2, Giants 1

Landon Powell homered in the eighth inning and Trevor Cahill broke a five-game losing skid as the Oakland Athletics finished off a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants with a 2-1 victory on Sunday.

Powell’s homer to left-center field off Jeremy Affeldt (1-1) snapped a 1-1 tie as Oakland won its fifth consecutive game and handed San Francisco its fourth consecutive loss.

Powell’s first homer of the campaign gave Cahill (7-5) his first victory since May 9. Cahill gave up one run and five hits in eight innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Brian Fuentes pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save.

San Francisco starter Matt Cain matched Cahill throughout his seven-inning stint, allowing a run on three hits. Cain struck out five and didn’t walk anybody.

Aaron Rowand’s two-out double in the second inning drove home Nate Schierholtz with San Francisco’s run.

Oakland tied the contest in the sixth when Jemile Weeks doubled and scored on Coco Crisp’s two-out single.

Weeks had three of Oakland’s five hits.
