A's 2, Angels 1 (10 innings)
Cliff Pennington tripled to lead off the 10th inning and later scored on a groundout by Conor Jackson as the Oakland A's posted a 2-1 win over the host Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.
Los Angeles' Bobby Abreu broke a 5-for-42 slump in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI double off Oakland closer Brian Fuentes (1-2) to force extra innings. Fuentes got the win, Brad Ziegler pitched the 10th for his fifth save and Jordan Walden (0-1) took the loss for the Angels.
Oakland starter Tyson Ross dueled with Los Angeles starter Dan Haren, scattering four hits in seven scoreless innings in his second major league start. Haren allowed three hits and one unearned run in seven innings, dropping his ERA to 1.23.
Ross, who has pitched mainly out of the bullpen, walked one, induced three double plays and allowed just two runners to reach second base.
The Athletics pushed across their first run in the third inning with a walk, hit batter and error before Daric Barton hit a sacrifice fly that scored Landon Powell.
Oakland was without two if its main offensive contributors. Coco Crisp left Tuesday's game with a quadriceps injury and outfielder Josh Willingham missed his second straight game after straining his back in the series opener Monday.
