Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 1: Drew Hutchison struck out five in seven strong innings and Jose Bautista hit a three-run homer as host Toronto avoided a three-game sweep.
Daniel Bard (5-6) struggled for Boston, allowing five runs and one hit while walking six in just 1 2/3 innings. The former reliever also hit two batters in his shortest start of the season.
Bautista made Bard pay for his wildness in the first, following back-to-back walks by driving a 3-2 fastball deep into the left field stands for his 14th homer. Bard would walk another batter before getting out of the first with a double play and a deep flyout.
The control problems continued in the second, with Bard again walking the first two batters before striking out two straight. Yunel Escobar was hit with a pitch to load the bases before Bautista drew another walk, forcing home a run.
Edwin Encarnacion picked up a painful RBI when he was hit by a pitch on the wrist, making it 5-0.
Hutchison (5-2) took care of the rest, allowing one run on five hits while walking one to earn the win. The 21-year old has allowed fewer than two runs in four of his last five starts.
Kelly Shoppach hit his third homer for the Red Sox's lone run.
