Tigers 3, Rangers 2 (Game 2)

Tigers 3, Rangers 2: Justin Verlander tossed six solid innings as Detroit held on to salvage a doubleheader split and halt an eight-game Texas winning streak.

The Rangers took the lead in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by David Murphy, but the Tigers responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Delmon Young tied the game with an RBI base hit and scored on a two-run single by Ramon Santiago.

Verlander (2-1) struck out eight and allowed just one run on four hits, but he walked three and needed 116 pitches to get through the sixth inning.

Murphy brought Texas back within one when he singled home a run against Joaquin Benoit in the eighth, and Detroit closer Jose Valverde allowed a pair of ninth-inning walks to put the go-ahead run on base with one out, but Elvis Andrus flied out and Josh Hamilton struck out to end the comeback bid.

The loss was the first in eight road games for the Rangers this season.

Neftali Feliz (1-1) was tagged with the loss despite yielding just three hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked four.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Santiago came into the game hitting just .118 with two runs batted in ... Including the first half of the doubleheader, Texas had won eight of its last 10 Saturday games ... The Rangers had been the last team remaining in the majors without a road loss.
