Lonnie Chisenhall and Drew Stubbs each knocked in a run with a fielder’s choice in the ninth inning as visiting Cleveland rallied past Baltimore.
Jason Giambi's 400th career double and two walks against Baltimore closer Jim Johnson (2-6) set the table in the ninth before Chisenhall and Stubbs each avoided double plays on grounders. Jason Kipnis belted a two-run homer for the Indians and Vinnie Pestano struck out two in a perfect ninth for his fifth save.
Indians starter Scott Kazmir took a no-hitter into the seventh before giving up an unearned run on one hit, and the Orioles scored twice in the eighth against winning pitcher Joe Smith (4-0). Nick Markakis’ fielder’s choice tied the game 2-2 before Manny Machado singled home the go-ahead run with two outs.
Machado lined his major-league leading 36th double for Baltimore’s first hit to lead off the seventh and scored on Chris Davis’ sacrifice fly to cut the Orioles’ deficit to 2-1. Baltimore starter Jason Hammel yielded two runs on four hits while striking out five in seven innings and is still winless (0-3) against the Indians in his career.
Hammel retired the first 10 batters he faced before Asdrubal Cabrera was hit by a pitch and Kipnis drilled a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field wall for a 2-0 lead. Cabrera was 1-for-3 in his first game back after missing the previous 19 with a strained right quadriceps muscle.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kazmir struck out four, walked one and allowed just the one hit before leaving after walking to the mound to start the bottom of the eighth. … Baltimore’s top prospect RHP Dylan Bundy is scheduled for Tommy John elbow surgery on Thursday. Bundy was the fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft. … The game was delayed one hour and six minutes by rain.
