Reds 9, Brewers 1

Homer Bailey cruised through eight strong innings and Ryan Hanigan drove in three runs as visiting Cincinnati earned a split of the four-game series against Milwaukee.

Bailey (8-10) struck out eight and allowed one run on three hits for the Reds, who remain five games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the race for the second National League wild-card spot. Brandon Phillips drove in a pair of runs and Chris Heisey singled twice and scored two runs as the offense did all of its damage with 10 singles and nine walks.

Khris Davis homered and accounted for two of the four hits for the Brewers. Wily Peralta (8-13) was knocked around for seven runs on eight hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings to fall to 1-4 in his last five starts.

Cincinnati began the second inning with four straight singles, capped by Hanigan’s hit to left that plated a pair. Shin-Soo Choo walked to reload the bases and Jack Hanahan scored on a passed ball before Phillips’ two-run single completed the five-run outburst.

Phillips walked leading off the fifth and came home when Heisey’s single ended Peralta’s afternoon. Hanigan added an RBI single and Milwaukee right-hander Tyler Thornburg walked in a pair of runs to cap a four-run inning and put the game away.
