Mets 3, Rockies 2

Rookie Juan Lagares drove in all three runs and Eric Young Jr. scored the tiebreaker from second base on an infield hit in the eighth inning as host New York held on to take the opener of the three-game series.

Young led off the eighth with a single and advanced to second on Marlon Byrd's flyout. After Ike Davis was walked intentionally, Lagares beat out a bouncer to second and Young easily outraced first baseman Todd Helton's throw to the plate to make a loser of Wilton Lopez (1-4).

Scott Atchison (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning while 40-year-old LaTroy Hawkins retired Yorvit Torrealba to earn his first save of the season after Davis dived to catch a foul line drive with runners on first and third. Charlie Blackmon hit a pinch-hit home run for Colorado, which fell to 1-7 on its 10-game road trip.

Chad Bettis, starting in place of Tyler Chatwood (left hamstring), allowed two runs and four hits in five innings in his second major-league game while retiring 13 of the last 15 batters he faced. New York's Jenrry Mejia yielded two runs (one earned) and four hits while striking out seven in 5 1/3 frames.

Lagares' two-run triple in the first inning came after Daniel Murphy's one-out single and Davis' two-out double. Nolan Arenado delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth to halve the deficit before Blackmon crushed an 0-2 slider from Mejia over the wall in right-center leading off the sixth.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez left in the sixth when Blackmon's fouled bunt attempt bounced off the ground and struck Gonzalez in the jaw. Gonzalez walked off the field with the help of trainers. ... New York closer Bobby Parnell was placed on the disabled list with a herniated disk in his neck. Wilmer Flores, who was 0-for-4 in his major-league debut while celebrating his 22nd birthday on Tuesday, was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas, where he led the Pacific Coast League with 86 RBIs. ... Young went 1-for-4 in his first game against his former team and took a two-run hit away from Helton with a diving catch to end the sixth. Young, who played his first 313 games over four-plus seasons with Colorado, was designated for assignment by the Rockies on June 12.
