Padres 5, Marlins 1

Will Venable hit a two-run homer and Eric Stults allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings as host San Diego defeated Miami for the second straight night.

Venable added a third RBI when he hit into a fielder’s choice in the eighth. Yonder Alonso and Everth Cabrera also drove in runs as the Padres won their third straight game and 10th in the last 13 outings.

Stults (3-2) gave up seven hits and two walks and struck out four with Miami’s run coming on a fourth-inning double by rookie Marcell Ozuna. Three relievers combined to retire the final eight Marlins in succession.

Alonso’s first-inning sacrifice fly got San Diego on the board and Venable hit a two-run shot in the second off Alex Sanabia (2-5) to make it 3-0. Cabrera singled in a run later in the inning.

Sanabia gave up four runs (three earned) and a season-high nine hits in 4 1/3 innings and left the contest with groin tightness. It was the first career start at Petco Park for the native San Diegan who attended high school about 15 miles to the southeast in the suburb of Chula Vista.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Padres 3B Chase Headley went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. … Ozuna went 2-for-4 for his fourth multi-hit game in eight major-league contests. … Marlins 2B Chris Valaika broke his left wrist when he was run into by Alonso during a stolen base in the eighth inning.
