Yankees 11, Angels 3
Alfonso Soriano hit a grand slam among his two homers and drove in a career-high seven runs as host New York extended its win streak to four games.
Soriano continued his assault on Los Angeles' pitching with his second two-homer game in as many nights and eclipsed his previous career-high total of six RBIs on Tuesday night to become the first player in franchise history to drive in at least six runs in back-to-back games.
Robinson Cano went 4-for-4 with a RBI to extend his hitting streak to nine games as the Yankees pulled within five games of the second wild-card slot by handing the Angels their fourth straight defeat. Soriano swatted his fifth career grand slam in the first inning and added a two-run bases-loaded double in the second as New York built an 8-0 lead.
Ivan Nova (6-4) gave up three runs on 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter in his seventh consecutive outing of at least seven innings. Chris Stewart added a two-run single and Curtis Granderson had two hits and an RBI to help the Yankees amass 25 runs in the last two games.
Angels ace Jered Weaver (7-6) was rocked for a career high-tying nine runs on nine hits in five innings and had his four-game winning streak snapped. Mike Trout had a pair of RBI singles for Los Angeles, which will look to avoid a sweep in Thursday's finale of the four-game set.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Soriano's homers, his sixth and seventh blasts in 17 games since joining the Yankees, gave him 396 for his career and lifted him into a tie with Joe Carter for 54th on the all-time list. He also became the third player in history (Rusty Greer, 1997; Geoff Jenkins, 2001) with at least six RBIs in consecutive games.... Trout has 11 RBIs in his last eight games and extended his on-base streak to 36 consecutive games. ... TMZ reported Wednesday that Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez is planning to sue Major League Baseball unless his entire 211-game suspension for his alleged involvement in the Biogenesis scandal is overturned.
