Yankees 3, Blue Jays 2 (2nd)

Jayson Nix singled home the winning run in the ninth inning after tying the game with a home run in the seventh as host New York swept a doubleheader from Toronto.

Mark Reynolds led off the ninth with a walk and pinch-runner Ichiro Suzuki advanced to second on a groundout. Ichiro promptly stole third before Nix ended things with a single to left field off Toronto reliever Darren Oliver (3-4).

The late-game heroics made a winner out of Mariano Rivera (4-2), who worked a scoreless ninth as New York moved within five games of Oakland for the second American League wild-card spot. The Yankees have won 10 of 11 meetings with Toronto in 2013.

The Yankees erased a 1-0 deficit in the third inning as Robinson Cano singled to left-center to score Austin Romine from second. Toronto surged back in front in the fifth as Rajai Davis - who scored on a wild pitch in the first - hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Munenori Kawasaki, who reached on a one-out triple.

Nix evened things in the seventh, golfing a Mark Buehrle pitch over the left-field seats for his third homer of the season. Romine finished 3-for-3.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Buehrle allowed two runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings. New York counterpart Phil Hughes was charged with two runs on seven hits over six frames. ... Blue Jays OF Kevin Pillar recorded his first major-league hit, drilling a line-drive single to center leading off the third inning. Pillar began his career 0-for-17. ... Toronto 2B Maicer Izturis left the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a mild left ankle sprain.
