Diamondbacks win finale with pinch-single in ninth
PHOENIX -- Arizona left fielder Brandon Drury had three hits, including a game-tying homer, and pinch-hitter Phil Gosselin singled in the winning in the bottom of the ninth inning in the Diamondbacks' 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday at Chase Field.
Tuffy Gosewisch doubled with two outs in the ninth against left-hander Brad Hand (4-4) and was replaced by pinch-runner Socrates Brito to bring up Gosselin.
Gosselin leads the major leagues with 20 pinch hits.
Right-hander Daniel Hudson (2-3) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the victory in what could be his final Arizona appearance. Hudson will be a free agent this winter, although Arizona general manager Dave Stewart said the team will have conversations with Hudson during the winer.
Arizona (69-93) swept the three-game series to finish ahead of the Padres (68-94) for fourth place in the National League West.
Ryan Schmipf hit an apparent go-ahead homer down the right field line with one out in the top of the ninth, but the ball was ruled foul after an replay review initiated by Arizona manager Chip Hale.
Wil Myers and Luis Sardinas has two hits apiece for the Padres, who lost their final four after winning three in a row.
Drury homered and had three hits. His homer with two outs in the eighth tied the score at 2.
Drury singled to open the second, took third on a single by Yasmany Tomas and scored on Chris Owings' fielder's choice grounder for a 1-0 lead against right-hander Paul Clemens.
Myers singled to open the fourth, took second base on a groundout and scored on Renfroe's two-out single to left field to tie the score at 1 against right-hander Matt Koch.
Renfroe, a top prospect recalled after the Triple-A El Paso season ended two weeks ago, ended the yeare with a six-game hitting streak.
Austin Hedges doubled with one out in the seventh off Steve Hathaway and scored on Luis Sardinas' double for a 2-1 lead. Silvino Bracho entered the game and struck out the final two batters of the inning.
Drury has 16 homers in his rookie season.
Clemens gave up one run and four hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two. He has allowed three earned runs or less in 10 of his 12 starts with the Padres this season.
Koch gave up one run and five hits in six innings in his second major league start. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
NOTES: Arizona C Welington Castillo was held out of the lineup for the second straight game because of general soreness. Castillo set career highs with 11 hits and 68 RBIs this season. ... Announcer Dick Enberg, the 2015 Ford C. Frick Award winner, called his final game for San Diego on Sunday. He joined the Padres' broadcast crew in 2010. Edberg won 14 Emmys in his career. ... Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt and 2B Jean Segura are the sixth set of teammates in major-league history to each have 20 homers and 30 stolen bases in the same season.
