Reds' Chase Burns shuts down Phillies' offense in win

Chase Burns worked six terrific innings to guide the visiting Cincinnati Reds to a 4-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

Burns (6-1) struck out nine before a trio of relievers combined for five more strikeouts to help Cincinnati win for just the second time in its last 12 road games. Burns gave up a run and three hits without a walk, lowering his ERA to 1.83.

Philadelphia, which had won eight of its last nine games, did not record a hit after the third inning. Jesus Luzardo (3-4) gave up two runs and five hits in six frames, while Trea Turner's fifth home run accounted for all the scoring for the Phillies.

Burns worked around a two-out double to Alec Bohm in the first inning, striking out Brandon Marsh to end the frame. He allowed another hit in the second but promptly induced a double play to escape that situation.

Luzardo benefited from a double play of his own in the third, setting the stage for Turner's two-out homer in the bottom half as the hosts took a 1-0 lead.

Elly De La Cruz opened the ensuing frame with a triple before Spencer Steer's infield single and Sal Stewart's walk loaded the bases. Dane Myers and JJ Bleday followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies to make it 2-1.

Burns struck out two more in the fourth before punching out all three hitters he faced in the fifth. The right-hander then logged a 1-2-3 sixth, recording the final out on a play where he was hit by a liner from Bryce Harper but recovered to throw to first.

Cincinnati tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh against the Philadelphia bullpen.

The Reds loaded the bases against Tanner Banks with the help of an error by Harper. Jonathan Bowlan came on with one out and allowed a run-scoring grounder by Matt McLain before walking De La Cruz to force in another run.

Cincinnati reliever Pierce Johnson worked around a leadoff walk in the seventh, and Sam Moll had no issues in the eighth. Tony Santillan struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth, including Bohm on an ABS challenge to conclude the game and record his second save.
