Believe it or not, but fantasy championship week is the perfect time to take advantage of your defensive slot. If you don’t have one of the top two or three defenses, feel free to play the matchups this week to get that extra two or three points, which could end up paying off at the end of the week.
1. Seattle Seahawks
Anyone who had the Seahawks defense last week likely gained a 10-point advantage over their opponent, given that Eli Manning gave them five interceptions on Sunday. That probably says more about Manning that Seattle’s defense, but it’s not like Carson Palmer is anything special. The Seahawks will be just fine this week against Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals, who are tied for the fifth most giveaways in the NFC this season with 25. There’s no reason to not expect the No. 1 overall defense this year to not come through on championship weekend.
Projected Statistics: Seven points allowed, three sacks, two interceptions, one fumble recovery
2. San Francisco 49ers
And who is tied with the Cardinals for the fifth most turnovers in the NFC? Why the Atlanta Falcons, of course, who take on the 49ers this week. In the past eight games, the Falcons have allowed an average of 11 fantasy points to opposing defenses, according to ESPN, and most recently allowed the Washington Redskins (one of the worst defenses in the NFL) to put up nine points. Since their Week 9 bye, San Francisco has scored eight or more fantasy points in all but one game, making it into the double digits three times. They’re a must-start this week against the woeful Falcons.
Projected Statistics: 10 points allowed, four sacks, one interception, one fumble recovery
3. Kansas City Chiefs
Don’t let their injuries fool you: the Chiefs are still an elite defense. Despite scoring in the negatives in Weeks 11 and 12, Kansas City has rattled off two games of 27 and 14 points, respectively. They don’t have a great matchup this week in the Indianapolis Colts, who aren’t incredibly effective on offense but at least protect the football. Andrew Luck or no Andrew Luck, there’s no denying the Chiefs have scored the most fantasy points of any defense this year, so there’s no reason to expect them to disappoint.
Projected Statistics: 14 points allowed, five sacks, one fumble recovery
4. St. Louis Rams
Now that the Carolina Panthers are officially out as a great defense, the Rams have taken over the role of quiet but incredibly effective defense. St. Louis has scored double-digit fantasy points six times this year, scoring 10 points twice in the last four weeks. Defensive end Robert Quinn leads the NFC with 15 sacks and eight forced fumbles and has looked almost unblockable in the last four games. Their Week 16 opponent, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are allowing almost nine fantasy points per game to opposing defenses, making the Rams a perfectly viable play this week.
Projected Statistics: 14 points allowed, four sacks, one interception
5. Cleveland Browns
The Browns have been dreadful as a scoring offense in the second half of the season, but there’s no arguing with the ineptitude of Geno Smith. Smith and the New York Jets are allowing over 13 fantasy points per game to defenses in their last five contests (and that includes the Raiders scoring -1 point in Week 14). The Browns are also only owned in 30.9 percent of ESPN leagues, making them a great option for a matchup start this week against a quarterback who has a 0.5 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
Projected Statistics: 24 points allowed, three sacks, three interceptions
