The running back position is finally back to normal this week. No teams are on bye, and there are no major injuries to report that owners didn’t already know about heading into Week 13. So which backs made the cut in this stacked and packed week?
1. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings
The last time Peterson played the Chicago Bears (Week 2) he only had eight points, but managed to carry the ball 26 times for 100 yards. Since that game, Peterson has scored eight touchdowns. These also aren’t the same Bears from Week 2. Chicago is allowing the fourth highest number of fantasy points to opposing running backs. Peterson is going to get his touches, and he’s going to get his yards. There’s no reason to expect anything different here.
Projected Statistics: 30 carries, 140 yards, one touchdown
2. Matt Forte, Chicago Bears
Sticking to the same game, Forte should find similar success to Peterson in this matchup. The Vikings are allowing the fifth most fantasy points to opposing running backs, and Forte continues to be the focal point of the offense with Jay Cutler out. Earlier in the week, it looked like a knee injury could keep him out in Week 13, but Forte should be good to go in this one. The last time Forte played the Vikings, he had 13 points on 88 rushing yards. He has also only had two games of single-digit fantasy points, and only one game of less than nine points. Minnesota is a flat-out bad defense, so he’ll find his way in the end zone one way or the other on Sunday.
Projected Statistics: 18 carries, 80 yards, four receptions, 40 yards, one receiving touchdown
3. Marshawn Lynch, Seattle Seahawks
Lynch has provided perhaps the best fantasy value this year out of all backs, considering guys like C.J. Spiller and Doug Martin went ahead of him in some drafts. In the past three games, Lynch has broken 20 points twice and has gone over 120 yards in two. The Saints are allowing 15 points per game to fantasy backs, and have slipped lately, allowing six touchdowns from opposing running backs in the last six games. Lynch has had a nose for the end zone this season, and he shouldn’t have much of a problem finding it again this week.
Projected Statistics: 21 carries, 105 yards, one touchdown
4. Jamaal Charles, Kansas City Chiefs
Charles has only had two games of single-digit fantasy points this year, one of them coming against the Denver Broncos in Week 11, who he’ll face for the second time in three weeks on Sunday. Denver’s defense isn’t anything to be terribly afraid of, but in the last matchup, Alex Smith was playing from behind the whole game with Peyton Manning on the other side, so Charles didn’t have as big of a role in the offense as he usually would. According to ESPN, Charles has the highest percentage of his team’s yardage out of any player in the league, which shows that the offense runs through him, not Smith. Don’t expect Charles to break 20 points this week, but he should also improve over his last game against the Broncos.
Projected Statistics: 15 carries, 80 yards, six receptions, 70 yards
5. LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia Eagles
There’s no getting around the fact that the Arizona Cardinals are a tough matchup for McCoy, but you just can’t look past McCoy’s fantasy numbers this season. Arizona is allowing the least amount of points to fantasy running backs (which is why he’s not higher on this list) but he’s broken 13 points in each of his last three games. McCoy is approaching 2,000 total yards for this season, but he has been held out of the end zone for the most part. He’ll get his yards though this week, mainly because of how much he means to Philly’s offense. He’s still a must-play in Week 13.
Projected Statistics: 18 carries, 90 yards, five receptions, 50 yards
