Yankees 12, White Sox 9
Nick Swisher, Eduardo Nunez and Marcus Thames hit two-run homers in consecutive innings as the New York Yankees outslugged the Chicago White Sox 12-9 Saturday.
Jorge Posada added a two-run double and Mariano Rivera earned his 26th save for the Yankees, who snapped a two-game slide and managed to hang on to a share of first place in the American League East.
New York got to left-hander John Danks (12-9) right away when Derek Jeter led off the top of the first with a hit and Swisher followed with his 24th blast of the season. The White Sox got a run back on Paul Konerko’s RBI single in the bottom half, but the Yankees were at it again in the second and third, getting two-run shots in both frames to increase the lead.
Danks was charged with a season-high eight runs on six hits while walking four in 4 1/3 innings.
CC Sabathia (18-5) didn’t have his best stuff but didn’t need it, as the hefty left-hander picked up his AL-leading 18th win despite allowing five runs on nine hits in seven frames.
Konerko and Andruw Jones homered for Chicago, which dropped 4 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central.
