Padres 3, Giants 2
Chase Headley had two hits and two RBIs and Clayton Richard beat San Francisco for the third time this season as the San Diego Padres defeated the host Giants 3-2 on Friday night.
Richard (10-5) gave up two runs and six hits in six innings, while Heath Bell notched his major-league leading 35th save as San Diego improved to 8-1 against the Giants this season. The victory increased San Diego's lead in the National League West to 3 1/2 games on San Francisco.
The Padres’ winning run scored in the sixth inning when Ryan Ludwick beat the throw home after Giants shortstop Juan Uribe fielded Headley’s grounder.
The Giants started fast with two first-inning runs on Aubrey Huff’s RBI double and Pat Burrell’s fielder’s choice. San Diego tied the game in the second on Headley’s run-scoring triple and Scott Hairston’s sacrifice fly.
San Francisco starter Jonathan Sanchez (8-8) gave up three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Padres played the game under protest after Hairston was called out for obstructing Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez in the fourth inning as Sanchez attempted to field a grounder. The ruling prevented San Diego from taking the lead at the time.
