White Sox 9, Mariners 3
Tyler Flowers hit a grand slam and Dayan Viciedo delivered a three-run shot as the Chicago White Sox routed the host Seattle Mariners 9-3 on Sunday.
Gavin Floyd (12-10) gave up two runs in 7 1/3 innings as Chicago completed a three-game sweep of the Mariners and moved into second place, six games behind Detroit in the American League Central.
Viciedo’s line-drive homer to center off Jason Vargas (7-12) gave Chicago a three-run lead in the fourth. Viciedo, one of Chicago’s top prospects, was playing in his first game since returning to the team after Carlos Quentin (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list Saturday.
Flowers' slam came during the White Sox’s six-run sixth. Brent Lillibridge and Paul Konerko added run-scoring singles. Konerko had three of Chicago’s 13 hits.
Josh Bard had three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the eighth for Seattle.
Floyd, who won for the sixth time in seven decisions, struck out six and walked none.
Vargas gave up nine runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings and lost for the seventh time in eight decisions.
