Tigers 4, Yankees 2
Scott Sizemore’s three hits in his season debut sparked the slumping Detroit offense and helped the Tigers snap a seven-game skid with a 4-2 victory over the visiting New York Yankees Tuesday night.
The Tigers’ second baseman was called up late Monday after hitting an International League-best .408 at Class AAA Toledo. He was just the elixir needed to stir up a lineup that put just three players on base in Monday’s loss to New York.
Sizemore, hitting second, scored a run in the first and singled home one in the fifth, which proved to be enough for Brad Penny (2-3). The Detroit righthander allowed one unearned run on six hits in six innings.
Austin Jackson, Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera also had RBIs against CC Sabathia (2-2), who gave up four runs on 10 hits and struck out six in seven innings.
Mark Teixeira delivered a solo shot in the eighth for the Yankees, but they failed to tag Jose Valverde for the second straight night. The Tigers’ closer shut down the side in the ninth for his sixth save.
