Tigers 6, Yankees 3

Brennan Boesch homered and drove in three runs and the Detroit Tigers took advantage of shoddy defense by the New York Yankees to post a 6-3 home victory on Thursday afternoon in the finale of their four-game series.

Rick Porcello pitched seven solid innings for the Tigers, who have won three in a row following a seven-game losing streak.

New York starter A.J. Burnett (4-2), who yielded five runs - two earned - and three hits in seven frames, kept Detroit hitless through five innings before Ramon Santiago led off the sixth with a single. Santiago came around to score three batters later on Boesch's single, tying the game at 2-2. Boesch opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first.

Brandon Inge put the Tigers ahead in the seventh with a sacrifice fly and two more runs scored later in the inning on the second throwing error of the game by Yankees shortstop Eduardo Nunez, who was filling in for Derek Jeter. The captain left Wednesday's game with a hip injury.

Boesch sealed the win in the eighth with a leadoff homer, his second blast of the season.

Porcello (2-2) allowed two runs and eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The 22-year old has surrendered two runs or less in each of his last four starts after yielding five apiece in his first two outings.

Slumping New York third baseman Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-2 and scored twice after entering the game as a pinch-runner for Eric Chavez, who left with a leg injury after hitting an RBI triple in the fourth.
