Braves 3, Phillies 2
Atlanta’s Dan Uggla led off the eighth inning with a long home run off Philadelphia ace Roy Halladay on Sunday, lifting the Braves to a 3-2 win over the Phillies at Turner Field.
Uggla’s seventh homer of the season was only the second allowed all year by Halladay (5-3), who struck out seven and allowed eight hits in eight innings. It was Uggla’s third career home run in 22 at-bats against Halladay.
Uggla scored all three runs, being driven in two previous times by rookie Freddie Freeman. He scored on Freeman’s single in the fourth and a sacrifice fly to deep left in the sixth.
Atlanta got another strong effort from starter Tim Hudson, who received no decision after allowing two runs in seven innings. Hudson walked a season-high five batters, equaling half of his total in his previous eight starts.
The winning pitcher was Jonny Venters (3-0), who pitched a scoreless eighth. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth to earn his 10th save as the Braves took two-of-three in the series and pulled to within 3 1/2 games in the NL East.
Philadelphia got its two runs on a deep two-run homer to left field by John Mayberry Jr., his second.
