Phillies 2, Rockies 1
Cole Hamels outdueled Jorge De La Rosa and Jimmy Rollins drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies edged the visiting Colorado Rockies 2-1 on Wednesday.
Wilson Valdez scored the winning run and drove in the first run for the Phillies, who snapped a season-high four-game slide.
Hamels (5-2) cruised through eight innings, striking out eight while allowing one run and five hits.
Ryan Madson worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to strike out the side for his seventh save.
The Rockies finally managed to break through in the seventh, knotting it at 1-1 when Todd Helton’s two-out double plated Carlos Gonzalez.
De La Rosa (5-2) matched Hamels through the first seven innings before letting it slip away in the eighth.
Valdez led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before scampering to third on a wild pitch. The Phillies took advantage of that mistake when Rollins lined out to right field just deep enough to plate Valdez.
The offensive problems persisted for Philadelphia, which has not managed more than three runs in any of its last five contests.
