Cubs 1, Padres 0 (10)
Pinch-hitter Tyler Colvin ripped a two-out double in the 10th inning to score Geovany Soto as the host Chicago Cubs outlasted the San Diego Padres 1-0 on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series.
Colvin lashed a pitch from Chad Qualls (0-1) into the right field corner to plate Soto from first, and put an end to a stirring pitchers' duel in cold, rainy and windy conditions at Wrigley Field.
Carlos Marmol (1-1), Chicago's third pitcher, went 1 1/3 innings for the win.
Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano struck out 10 and allowed three hits in eight innings. It was his highest strikeout total since fanning 10 against Houston on Sept. 14, 2008.
San Diego's Tim Stauffer worked seven scoreless innings, and allowed four hits while striking out four and walking one.
After escaping a two-on, two-out jam in the second, Zambrano overpowered San Diego by retiring 18-of-19 batters, including the last 13 in a row.
The Padres also had two on and two out in the ninth, but Marmol struck out Nick Hundley to end the threat.
