Reed Johnson homered in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Chicago Cubs posted a 2-1 home victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader.
Jeff Samardzija (1-0) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top half of the frame to secure the victory. Samardzija permitted two hits and both walked and struck out three in two innings of work.
Luke Gregerson (0-1) allowed the solo shot and two hits in one inning of work to suffer the loss.
Chicago starter Matt Garza tossed six strong innings and even came around to score on Marlon Byrd's run-scoring single in the third for Chicago (9-8).
Garza struck out nine and walked three but was denied his first win of the season after Carlos Marmol blew the save opportunity in the ninth inning.
Jason Bartlett plated Cameron Maybin with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning for San Diego (7-10).
The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday night when San Diego righthander Aaron Harang (3-0) faces Chicago lefthander James Russell (1-1).
