Rookie Manny Machado overcame a brutal day at the plate with an RBI single in the 14th inning as host Baltimore swept a pivotal three-game set from Tampa Bay.
After failing to score with the bases loaded and no outs in the 13th inning, Baltimore finally solved Chris Archer (0-3), who was entering his fourth frame of duty as Tampa Bay's ninth pitcher of the day. Adam Jones worked a two-out walk and Endy Chavez singled before Machado - who had an error and was 0-for-5 prior to the at-bat - singled to shallow left to plate Jones with the winning run.
Taylor Teagarden ripped a two-run double in the seventh inning and Chris Davis collected three hits for the Orioles, who posted their 14th win in 19 outings to remain tied with New York atop the American League East. The Yankees defeated Boston 2-0 later Thursday.
Baltimore won for the 16th time in 17 one-run games and improved to a league-best 27-7 overall in that department.
Ben Zobrist had an RBI infield single and scored on Jeff Keppinger's sacrifice fly for the Rays, who have lost six of seven and were swept at Camden Yards for the first time since May 8-10, 2007. Tampa Bay sits 3 1/2 games behind New York for the second wild card.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jones saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end after an 0-for-5 performance. ... Tampa Bay's Ryan Roberts, who exited with a bruised lower left leg, collected a pair of hits and has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 contests. ... The Orioles will open a nine-game road trip on Friday against wild card-leading Oakland. The Rays will invade New York for a three-game series with the Yankees this weekend.
