White Sox 5, Tigers 2

White Sox 5, Tigers 2
: Jake Peavy struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings to outduel Max Scherzer as host Chicago got some overdue revenge for last season and won its home opener.

Dayan Viciedo homered and Paul Konerko drove in a run and scored for the White Sox, who were swept twice by Detroit in September last season as they tumbled out of the race.

Peavy (1-0) cruised through the first six innings on 76 pitches, yielding only one hit before running into some trouble in the seventh. The veteran right-hander issued a one-out walk but looked like he was about to escape the inning when Delmon Young golfed a 1-2 curveball over the wall in left to cut it to 3-2.

The White Sox lifted Peavy after that pitch, closing his afternoon with two runs on two hits and a walk.

Scherzer (0-1) was nearly as sharp, striking out 11 in six innings.

Scherzer’s first mistake came in the fifth, when he hung a 1-0 breaking ball that Viciedo blasted to left-center for his first homer.

The White Sox got a rally going in the sixth with Konerko making it 2-0 on an RBI single and A.J. Pierzynski following with a run-scoring triple.

Chicago tacked on two more runs in the eighth and Hector Santiago worked a scoreless ninth for his third save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Pierzynski has seven RBIs in the last three games. … The White Sox have won five straight home openers. … Cabrera has been held hitless in two straight games after going 8-for-17 (.471) in the first five.
