Tigers 5, White Sox 2

Rick Porcello allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings and visiting Detroit averted a three-game sweep in Chicago.

Gerald Laird homered and the Tigers scored two runs off wild pitches to snap the White Sox's four-game winning streak.

Porcello (2-0) turned in a stellar performance, blanking Chicago on three hits before Dayan Viciedo broke up his shutout bid with a two-out home run in the eighth.

The 23-year-old Porcello allowed the one run on five hits while striking out four and not walking a batter to improve to 3-0 in his last four starts against the White Sox.

Chicago left-hander Chris Sale (1-1) lasted only five innings, giving up three runs on five hits in his second career start.

Laird staked Porcello to a 1-0 lead with a leadoff homer in the third inning before the Tigers tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings - both on wild pitches - and two in the ninth for a 5-1 edge.

Back-to-back doubles by Jhonny Peralta and Laird and a walk to Austin Jackson loaded the bases in the fifth before Sale uncorked a wild pitch.

Prince Fielder ended Sale's day with a leadoff double in the sixth. He moved to third on Delmon Young's single and score on a wild pitch by Nate Jones for a 3-0 edge.
