Diamondbacks 8, Padres 5: Jason Kubel belted a pair of home runs and Justin Upton collected four hits, including a solo blast, as visiting Arizona ended its seven-game losing streak against San Diego.
Aaron Hill also went deep and Jake Elmore drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks, who improved to 5-4 on their 10-game road trip and climbed within 5 1/2 games of St. Louis for the second wild-card spot in the National League.
Kubel gave Arizona an early lead with a two-run shot in the first inning and went back-to-back with Hill to begin the third as the Diamondbacks built a 6-2 advantage. The second homer was the 29th of the year for Kubel, who eclipsed his previous career high set in 2009 while with Minnesota.
Wade Miley (15-9) picked up the win despite allowing five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Three relievers bridged the gap to J.J. Putz, who struck out the side in the ninth for his 29th save in 34 opportunities.
Casey Kelly (1-1) lasted only 2 1/3 innings, surrendering six runs and eight hits. The 22-year-old has yielded 13 runs - 11 earned - over eight frames in his last two starts after tossing six scoreless innings in his major-league debut.
Logan Forsythe hit a two-run homer and Jesus Guzman added a two-run double for the Padres, who lost at home for just the sixth time in 23 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego OF Carlos Quentin was kept out of the lineup due to right knee irritation. Quentin missed two of the previous three games with the issue. ... Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt was back in the starting lineup after being scratched Friday with a stomach ailment. Ryan Wheeler, who filled in for Goldschmidt and had three RBIs, caught the bug along with RHPs David Hernandez and Brad Bergesen. LHP Tyler Skaggs, who was Friday's starter, was the team's first victim on Thursday.
