Jesus Guzman belted a three-run homer and Clayton Richard won his fifth straight decision as visiting San Diego salvaged the finale of the three-game series.
Richard (14-12) gave up four runs over six innings and improved to 6-0 in eight career starts against the Diamondbacks, who dropped 5 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second National League wild card. Five relievers worked a scoreless ninth, with Anthony Bass getting the final out for his first save.
The Padres grabbed a first-inning lead on Guzman’s two-out, three-run homer off rookie Tyler Skaggs (1-3), who allowed four runs over five frames.
San Diego, which won the season series against the Diamondbacks with a 9-3 record, took a 6-2 lead in the sixth on RBI doubles by Chris Denorfia and Chase Headley.
Arizona scored twice in the sixth inning on run-scoring singles by Paul Goldschmidt and Chris Johnson and pulled closer in the seventh on Adam Eaton’s first career homer off Brad Brach.
