Padres 5, Diamondbacks 1

Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to lift host San Diego in the rubber game of the three-game series.

Gyorko, a rookie second baseman, had two hits to give him six in the series and San Diego starter Edinson Volquez (3-3) won his third straight start, allowing one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Arizona right-hander Ian Kennedy (1-3) allowed five runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings, departing after allowing the back-to-back homers. Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius, in his first game back after missing a week with a concussion, had two of Arizona’s four hits, including a solo homer to lead off the third.

San Diego scored twice in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Chase Headley extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single and Yonder Alonso brought home the second run with a sacrifice fly.

The Diamondbacks got a run back on the home run by Gregorius, but Gyorko, who was coming off the first three-hit game of his career in Saturday’s loss, hit a two-out, two-run homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-1 and Venable followed with a solo shot.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kennedy came into the game with a 1.13 ERA in four starts at Petco Park, the second-lowest of any visiting pitcher with at least four starts. … The Padres placed LHP Clayton Richard on the 15-day disabled list with an intestinal issue and RHP Tyson Ross (left shoulder) was activated. … The back-to-back home runs by the Padres were the first since Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Blanks accomplished the feat on April 5, 2010.
