The Dodgers answered in the bottom half when Carl Crawford doubled with two outs and scored on Mark Ellis’ single off Tyson Ross, who had a career-high 10 strikeouts over five innings of one-run ball.
Puig broke the tie in the sixth with a solo homer into the left-field seats off Dale Thayer (2-5), giving him four home runs in his first 10 games against the Padres. Ellis, Puig and Crawford had two hits apiece for the Dodgers, who moved a season-high 26 games over .500 at 81-55.
San Diego was held to three hits, including Reymond Fuentes’ first major-league hit in the eighth inning. Fuentes later moved to third base with two outs before Chris Denorfia grounded out to pitcher Paco Rodriguez to end the threat.
