Phillies 4, Nationals 2
Cole Hamels worked eight strong innings and Michael Young drove in a pair as Philadelphia held off visiting Washington.
Hamels (4-11) surrendered a run and six hits while striking out four and got Jayson Werth to fly out to deep center with the bases loaded to end the eighth. Antonio Bastardo yielded an RBI double in the ninth but picked up his second save for the Phillies, who pulled to within a game of .500 at 45-46.
Werth hit a solo homer and Scott Hairston recorded two hits in his Nationals debut. Taylor Jordan (0-2) was charged with four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings to absorb the loss.
Werth belted a 1-1 changeup out to left-center in the second inning to give Washington an early lead but Philadelphia got that run back in the fourth. Domonic Brown sent a sinking line drive to right that Werth played on a hop and fired home in front of Chase Utley, but catcher Kurt Suzuki dropped the ball while attempting to tag the runner.
Ben Revere came home on an error in the sixth to put the Phillies on top and Young sent a double into the gap in right-center to plate two more.
