Phillies 3, Nationals 2

Carlos Ruiz hit the go-ahead single in the eighth inning as host Philadelphia shaded Washington.

As a sensational pitchers' duel between Washington's Stephen Strasburg and Philadelphia's Cole Hamels settled nothing, the Phillies surged ahead after Scott Hairston's sacrifice fly put the Nationals ahead in the top of the frame. Jimmy Rollins belted a two-out double to the wall in right-center to score Cesar Hernandez and Ruiz followed two batters later with a run-scoring single to left.

B.J. Rosenberg (2-0) recorded the final out of the eighth inning to earn the win, while Jonathan Papelbon worked around a pair of singles in the ninth to secure his 24th save. Tyler Clippard (6-3) took the loss for the Nationals, who fell 7 1/2 games back of Cincinnati for the second wild-card spot

After Ryan Zimmerman's solo blast to left-center field opened the scoring in the first inning, the Phillies drew even in the fourth as Ruiz's broken-bat bloop single up the middle scored Rollins from third.

Strasburg limited Philadelphia to an unearned run on two hits over six innings, striking out 10. Hamels was just as solid, allowing a run on two hits with eight strikeouts over seven frames.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Strasburg has three double-digit strikeout games this season, and 11 in his career. ... Hamels has recorded eight straight quality starts, going 2-0 with five no-decisions in his last seven. ... The win evened the season series 7-7.
