A.J. Pollock had three hits and Randall Delgado allowed two over five innings as visiting Arizona gained a split of the four-game series.
Ender Inciarte, Chris Owings and Aaron Hill had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks, who have allowed three runs or fewer in eight straight games. Delgado (3-3) did not walk a batter in his first start since April 10 and helped Arizona record its first season series win against San Diego since 2011.
Ian Kennedy (10-12) struggled against his former team and fell behind 3-0 in the second inning when five of the first six batters reached base. Inciarte capped the rally with an RBI single off Kennedy, who allowed four runs on 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Mark Trumbo belted a leadoff double in the third and Miguel Montero followed with an RBI single for Arizona, which moved ahead 5-0 on Hill’s RBI double off Blaine Boyer in the seventh. Montero has recorded a hit in 13 straight games against San Diego, which has scored a total of eight runs over its last five games.
Alexi Amarista went hitless in three at-bats and failed to reach base safely for the first time in 13 games for the Padres, who were held to four hits. San Diego avoided a shutout in the ninth as Will Venable hit a leadoff single and later scored on Oliver Perez’s first wild pitch of the season.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hill started at third base for the first time since 2005 and made an outstanding diving catch of Rene Rivera’s liner in the fifth inning. … The Padres announced that RHP Joe Wieland will make his season debut Saturday against Colorado. … Arizona RF David Peralta singled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
